This Day's Verse

Jeremiah 10:7Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.

Settling my estate...

Last weekend I went garage saling with my daughter, sister, mother, niece and four children. We had a lovely time. We got some great deals. We were about spent in more ways than one when we came across an estate sale and decided to stop. Normally, I don't go to estate sales because things tend to be pricier than at a garage sale. My sister said it is because of sentimental value. I can understand that. This estate sale was half price since it was the last day. We went in and at the front door, there was the owner of the home greeting us with a smile.

Walking around his fine home, perusing all his and his wife's things, I started feeling sorta guilty. I heard bits and pieces of the owner's story. His name was Bill. His wife had passed. She had been a teacher. (I'm a teacher). She had been an artist. ( I'm an artist). We were looking through remnants of their lifetime of collections, supplies, sentimental items, all displayed out and up for grabs: paint brushes, beads, art books, fabric was among the furniture, housewares, dishes, clothes, and travel souvenirs. She and I would have had a lot in common.
Then, I remembered the day years ago when my precious aunt, who is still living, gathered my mom, my cousin, my other aunt, myself and my sisters together. She was moving into a senior center. There was so much "stuff" that she could not take with her for lack of space: Princess House, Fosberg, Silverware sets, framed prints, rugs, handmade quilts her mother had made, boxes of photo albums, a dining set with a buffet, and more!  We all sat in her living room and she stood in the center and told us, "I could have had an estate sale. But, I don't want to sell things that I worked hard to acquire just for a few bucks. I would rather give them to those I love." We sat in awe as she unloaded box after box of fine items and sentimental treasures and Gave them to us! I can't tell you what it meant to us to be recipients of these gifts.
I thought about the woman who used to own these items so similar to my own. I felt a little direful. I have so much stuff! Someone will get some deals one day if this ever happens to all my belongings. Then, I thought about the real truth of the matter. The woman was very blessed. She had plenty. So do I. But, she couldn't take it with her. Neither can I.
If you know me very well, you probably already know that I believe in the Biblical principle of giving.   Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. Luke 6:38
I try to never let an offering plate pass without putting something in it. I pay my tithes. I give special offerings. I help people if I can when I see a need.  Taking stock of all my possessions, I realize that it is probably because of my giving that I am so blessed.  Still, I hope before  it all ever goes on display, that I will give more of it away.
